Local Diversity project wins Impact Award
At the recent Trent & Dove Housing Impact on the Community Awards, a project aimed at improving understanding and awareness of different faiths amongst young people, was successful in winning the ‘Contribution to Community Cohesion Award’ (Sponsored by Walker Troup, Architects).
East Staffordshire Racial Equality Council (ESREC) is a voluntary organisation working in partnership to improve community cohesion and integration. Its objectives are to eliminate racial discrimination, promote equality of opportunity and develop good race relations. It launched its Interfaith Awareness programme in 2007 to promote understanding and awareness of different religions amongst young people by removing fear and breaking down barriers through challenging perceptions, thereby promoting greater community cohesion and integration.
The programme has proved popular, with just under 1700 children from 30 different schools taking part in ‘faith trails’, which included visits to different places of worship to gain a better understanding of various religions.
Amir Kabal, director of ESREC said on winning the award;
“We are very pleased to have won the impact in the community award. It is exciting for the staff to learn that their hard work is recognized and acknowledged. These awards by Trent & Dove provide an excellent opportunity to celebrate, share and promote community cohesion”.
