Vote for the Kingfisher Project with Tesco Bags of Help Blue Chips

Customer News, News

The Kingfisher Project has been selected for funding via the Tesco’s Bags of Help programme.

Bags of Help is Tesco’s local community grant scheme where the money raised by the carrier bag charge in Tesco stores is being used to fund thousands of community projects across Great Britain. The programme will support local good causes and grants, and up to £4,000 will be available to support local projects that benefit the community.

The Kingfisher Project is a community led initiative that aims to provide a pleasant open space in an urban area. Running along the canal there are two community gardens that are open to everyone in the local area. This includes residents who live in flats that don't have their own outside space. In between these gardens is a linear area that has some raised allotments that are used by volunteers, school groups and residents. Every year the produce grown by volunteers helps to supply local community cafes and also supports the provision of fresh food in food bags which are being increasingly accessed by local residents. This local demand highlights that more raised beds would have a greater impact for the local community. It is proposed that the current beds are replaced as they are coming to the end of their life and additional beds constructed to meet this demand. At least two of the beds would be raised to a height that is accessible to someone with access restrictions and a self watering system installed. The construction and installation would be undertaken by volunteers and school groups. Enquiries have already been made by Everyone Health and Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to enable their clients to use the space as part of their recovery.

The Kingfisher Project is one of three local projects that have been selected and currently in store for shoppers to vote. A token is given to customers when they have paid for their shopping.
