Jacob goes from site to surveying with an HTQ

Former bricklayer, Jacob Bancroft has gained the skills and experience to become a property surveyor with us after undertaking an HTQ qualification at Burton and South Derbyshire College.

Jacob initially trained as a bricklayer and was self-employed before deciding to explore other career options in the construction industry.

He began as a Trainee Surveyor with us, and, as part of our commitment to giving our future generations the tools they need to thrive within the social housing industry and beyond, we encouraged him to develop his skills through a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) in Architectural Technology at Burton and South Derbyshire College’s Stephen Burke Construction Academy.

Jacob undertook the course while working full-time, combining academic study with practical experience in the workplace, an approach increasingly valued by employers in the built environment sector. During his studies, he was promoted to Property Surveyor with us, demonstrating the immediate impact of his learning in the workplace.

Speaking about his experiences of retraining, Jacob said:

“Trent & Dove really encourages training and development - they see gaining qualifications as an investment in the future, and that support has been a big part of my progression. With a shortage of surveyors in the industry, I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to train, develop, grow and become fully qualified.”

Jacob added:

“I was promoted from a trainee surveyor to a property surveyor during my course, and I think the qualification had a lot to do with that. I’ve been able to implement things I learnt on the course and transfer those skills back into my work.”

With demand for technically skilled professionals continuing to grow across the construction industry, HTQs are increasingly supporting career changers and upskilling those already working in the sector.

Luke Tomlinson, Repairs Manager at Trent & Dove, said:

“We have a strong relationship with Burton and South Derbyshire College, and invest heavily in training, from apprenticeships to Higher Technical Qualifications. With a shortage of surveyors across the industry, it’s been great to support Jacob’s development into a fully qualified role and see him make the transition from a trade background into surveying. Investing in training allows us to attract and develop talented people and build the skilled workforce the sector needs.”

We enjoy a strong partnership with Burton and South Derbyshire College through its apprenticeship scheme.
