Tribute to local hero: Fun day to celebrate Kingfisher Project's 20 years

We are honoured to hold a fun day to mark the 20th anniversary of a multiple award-winning community project in memory of its “dedicated” founder.
Keith Lemare was the driving force behind transforming a run-down, forgotten piece of land in Burton upon Trent, into a wildlife haven, and his legacy will continue with a popular fun day showcasing the beauty of the land.
Ursula Bennion, CEO at Trent & Dove, said:
“The Kingfisher Project is a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with passion and purpose.“Keith Lemare’s vision transformed neglected land into a much-loved space for both people and wildlife, and it’s thanks to his dedication - and the tireless work of volunteers - that it continues to flourish today.“As we mark 20 years of this incredible project, it’s a moment to reflect on Keith’s inspiring legacy, celebrate all that’s been achieved, and look forward to what the future holds for this special place.”

Keith Lemare, centre, received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2016
Mr Lemare started the project, known as the Kingfisher Project, in 2005, after concerns from residents about the poor state of the land around the Horninglow Channel on the Trent & Mersey Canal, between Eton Park and Dallow Lock.
Volunteers cleared two miles of embankment, installed new fencing, planted trees, organised community litter picks and involved local schoolchildren in minibeast surveys.
The channel became a wildlife corridor and semi-natural habitat several miles long, which runs through Burton's urban and industrial areas.

The Kingfisher Garden has been transformed into a community haven
It now includes two community gardens, off Beresford Road and Masefield Crescent, Burton, both owned by us and managed by a group of hardworking volunteers.
A fun day held by Trent & Dove will take place at the Masefield Crescent garden, from 11.30am to 2.30pm on Thursday 14th August.
The free event will include giveaways, face painting, balloon modelling, pottery making, games and much more. Our famous Coffee Connect van will be on site, handing out free refreshments.
The Kingfisher Project has won multiple accolades over the years, including the community category of the Staffordshire Green Awards; Community Engagement of the Decade award in the Regen West Midlands 2010, and was recognised with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2016.
Mr Lemare was Project Chairman up until his death on 22nd May 2025, aged 73. It means the fun day to mark the project’s 20th anniversary will be even more poignant.

“We’re thrilled to be hosting this special fun day to celebrate 20 years of the Kingfisher Project - a true testament to community spirit and environmental care.“It’s a chance for families to come together, enjoy the beautiful space, and remember the incredible legacy of Keith Lemare, whose vision made this possible. This event is about honouring the past, but also inspiring the next generation to connect with nature and each other.”
